Concept

The invention of the printing press technique and the construction of 'de Grote Sint Laurenskerk in Alkmaar almost took place at the same time. The past 500 years show a wide variety of graphic art. In these current technological times, graphic art is under constant change. This exhibition also philosophates about the future of the existing various graphic crafts, arts to come and where the borders of graphic design will lie in the coming 500 years.

The time travel journey is visualised with banners in the choir ambulance with a 100 year time change every 10 meters. Starting at 1518 at the entrance, showing banners with 2018 in the middle and ending the exhibition in 2518.

the manifestation

During this manifestation, three artists in residence studio's were available in the church niches, providing creative spaces for a different graphic artist weekly. Through the open character of these niches, visitors were able to see inside the creators' studio and ask questions. In the middle of the exhibition lies a museum shop. The materials

This exhibition has to comply with guidelines since de Grote Kerk is a monumental building. Therefore the exhibition elements used had to be lightweight and modular. All materials were reusable, due to environmental choices as well as budget restrictions. The borrowed materials used are aerated concrete blocks, plastic pallets, heavy mesh panels, IBC Containers. The difference between the past 500 years and the coming 500 shows through a change of colour. Orange to represent the past and blue to indicate the future. This because the speculation will be that the dye for red/orange will be very rare to create in the future, making this colour almost extinct in printing.
